Office furniture layout must allow staff (and yourself) to exercise their competence and hence work effectively.  It should not contribute to:

  • arm tiredness
  • back ache
  • wrist pain
  • neck muscle tiredness
  • eyestrain
  • leg tiredness

Generally tiredness is what slows people down as the day progresses.  You can help your staff maintain their feeling of wellbeing and hence their effectiveness.

Check the following:

 Desk too high (not more than 735mm)  
 Desk too low (not less than 680mm)  
 Desktop too shallow (not less than 800mm for computers)  
 Desktop too thick (maximum 33mm)  
 Monitor not in line with keyboard  
 Source documents should not be flat on the desktop  
 Keyboard too far away  
 Monitor too low (but may need to be for someone wearing graduated lenses)  
 Mouse too far away or poorly placed  
 Light reflection (window or light fittings) in the monitor screen  
 Light shining in operator's eyes  
 Too much contrast between paper and desktop colours  
 Phone shouldn't be cradled in neck (need for phone headset?)  
 Phone too far away / on wrong side    
 Fully ergonomic chair which meets Worksafe guidelines  
 Correct adjustment of chair  
 Need for a footrest  
 Sufficient desktop space for paperwork, folders, notepad, printers, etc.  

 Too much noise

 
 Temperature too high/low  
 Often-needed references within easy reach (not cluttering up desktop)  
 Cables not to run across the floor  
 Low, heavy, hard to open, filing drawers  

 Tasks not planned to allow for mini-breaks
